Ghostbusters DVD

I spotted this at the grocery store. Ghostbusters I and II on DVD! I would love to buy one! Problem is, it's PAL. I wish somebody from the Philippines will buy me one of this...

Weekend gardener week01

The first week of my gardening ambitions is going along nicely.

I bought two packets of seeds last weekend: one for lettuce, another for broccoli. I wanted to have tomatoes but according to its packet, tomatoes are not ideal for winter, and that's where we're headed to real soon. And so I settled for these greens. The lettuce will be ready for picking after 60 days and will actually be "ripe" just in the nick of time, as the month of May is the start of the months when lettuce is not a good crop to plant. The broccoli will be ready about a month after that but it is a something that can be planted the whole year round. No, I did suddenly not become an expert on veggie planting overnight; these were also indicated on the packets.
This is the plot Jo-Lo and I have been watering whenever I come home from work (except on four days when the weather suddenly became bleak with overcast skies and showers). It looks like nothing much happened but on closer inspection...
...you see seedlings sprouting about! Now, I am fairly sure that many of these are weeds trying to catch up on recapturing the land after the havoc I did when I dug up the land. But there were seedlings growing in a row, and that is a good sign indeed. These are the lettuce; the broccoli are doing fine as well, though they are not as visible. The lettuce seeds were far greater in number. The packets cost NZ$2.45 each, by the way, from The Warehouse.
Even the celery which I just stuck into the earth rather than dumping it into the rubbish bin is thriving pretty well!
We have a greenhouse of sorts that's attached to the house, and in here I planted some tomato seeds (from actual tomatoes... in case it will grow), and some of the seeds too. Here they are, growing rather well.
I am wondering now when I should move some of these seedlings out into the open, for they cannot fit into these small containers. I have dug up the patch of land next to the one I have planted on, and this will house some of the seedlings.

The weekend gardener

This new place we moved to here in Johnsonville is a source of happiness for me because not only do we have more room to move around, but there is an area near the back of the house where we can have a vegetable garden! So on our first weekend after moving, I proceeded to clear the plot of grass and weeds.

Our landlord recommended planting on the elevated area, as they said this was the fertile area. However, I plan to clear out the lower area as well. The black container beyond is a compost bin.An afternoon later and with the help of Jo-Lo, we have finally cleared the land and created two elevated rows.

That said, I am no professional gardener, nor do I have the patience of conditioning the soil prior to planting. I am hoping the magic and simplicity of veggies growing in my hometown of Baguio will happen here as well. I have to expedite things though, as winter will be coming soon and the veggies need a couple of months to grow and be in harvesting age.
I have actually gotten some seeds already but I will tell that story in my next post... gotta take some photos first.

Panagbenga 2009

The Panagbenga 2009 schedule of events is now out! It will be a month-long festivity of flowers and food! I learned that my friends in Manila are now having a problem booking in hotels, all are fully-booked! I guess it really helps if you know people there who can set-up a room in their house for you for a couple of days.

You can find the sched in GoBaguio.

If you happen to go there and you might pass by Burnham Park, I would love it if you could please take photos of the Children's Park? It was starting renovation when we left last September. I would like to see how things are progressing so far. Thanks!

Mouse origami

Having constructed fun origami projects such as boats, containers, and the ever popular Japanse crane, I find constructing more complicated origami fun and engaging. This mouse is one such example, made from mail catalogs.

I experienced a bit of a challenge with the size and thickness of the paper, though. After multiple folds, the front paws became difficult to form. I like the way the ears are formed, though.
