Potatoes going strong

As of yesterday, I have planted 6 celery seedlings and a bunch of coriander to add to the herb patch. Warmer weather has arrived inspite of the many overcast days.

The perfect time for gardening

The plants are looking good so far. In fact, the potatoes have sprouted already. The tomato plant in the sun room currently has two green "berries" as well. Looks really good! This progress has really motivated me to look after the garden when I come home after work even if it's just for a wee while.

I have also decided to come up with a small patch of herbs in the garden. Not the sensitive ones (like the basil, which unfortunately perished during the winter months). I currently have sage which I bought recently, as well as baby onion leaves (forgot what this is really called) that was sitting in the sun room but I think it now needs more space to grow because the dried-up leaves have clumped up.

I also have rosemary in a separate container but still pondering if I will plant it here as well because it can grow to unmanageable proportions and overshadow the other herbs.

Will research on other hardy herbs that I can plant here. But if you have suggestions, I'd love to hear from you here or in Facebook!

PS additional reference for sage I would like to read up on at - surprise! - the Washington Post

Capsicum, tomatoes, and potatoes in the garden

Finally, after many weekends of trying to clear up the plot overrun by weeds and grass, I am ready to plant. My adventure with broccoli and lettuce last autumn produced mixed results, hopefully this new batch will be more successful.

This time around I have decided to plant potatoes and capsicum. I bought a small pack of seed potatoes which, at $2.00, is a steal. There were more than a dozen potatoes in there! And then I also bought half a dozen capsicum plants.
It's tempting to plant potatoes that came from the supermarket, especially if they have started to sprout but based on my readings, such varieties are not suited for gardening and may be prone to bacteria.
I found that keeping record of my planting sessions in this blog enables me to keep track of progress in a more interesting way.

I have also planted some in potatoes in a pot and are staying in the sun room. Not surprisingly, these have sprouted faster than their counterpart in the backyard. I'm planning to get more pots and have more plants in the sun room for a more controlled environment.

I have also planted a couple of tomatoes, this time not the seeds coming from the supermarket variety but rather from gardening stock so I hope that works as well, and the Wellington wind be gentle in the coming summer months.
