St Vincent Church

The St Vincent Church is memorable to me not because of the Church itself, but because of the Gym to its right.  Back in high school, my friends Sonny and Leo and I would industriously take the long walk from SLU Boys High to the Gym.  Nope, no jeepney rides for us because we're saving up every cent we have to buy... used stamps!  Yep, we were philatelists in our youth, influenced by Leo.  The Gym has a store inside where we buy the stamps.  I don't remember now how we knew the store sold stamps, but I believe it was Leo who made the discovery too.

And when we have extra funds, we'd also buy Bazooka Joe Bubble Gum so we can save up the comic strips and exchange them for Bazooka Joe goodies which the store also incidentally stocks.

I still remember the name of the store owner; we all became friends because we were always at the store.  Her name was Hermana.  Sadly, she was murdered right in the store one weekend, and we never went back again.

Incidentally, a photo of this area can also be found in this blog, during the July 16, 1990 earthquake.

In the above photo, I notice that to the right of the Gym is a signage for St Louis School Center.  The school here before was Holy Family, I believe.  Not sure where it is now.

Before SLU bought the place it was the Holy Family Academy. I know because I studied there from 1949 to 1953; Kinder to 3rd grade.
