Ghostopolis is a graphic novel that I had borrowed from the Library. Every now and then I veer off from the Marvels and the DC Comics and check out the other stuff. I have found a number of gems, and this is definitely one of them.
A regular boy named Garth Hale was in a not-so-ordinary circumstance: he had an incurable disease, and so his time on earth is counted, a situation his mother is despairing about. Also in this world, ghosts are as real as their living counterparts. Only, they are not suppose to wander about. But occasionally they escape from their world and into ours, and it's up to the Supernatural Immigration Task Force to right this.
Unfortunately one of their agents, Frank Gallows, has a track record for messing things up and in an unfortunate turn of events with a phantom horse, Garth was sent to the netherworld too! Now it's up to Garth to find his way back, and for Frank - who had been fired from his job because of this - to get him back.
Garth Hale meets his grandfather in the afterlife and together (along with the horse which became rather fond of him) they make the journey to bring Garth back. Meanwhile Frank also manages to go to the netherworld through his ex-girlfriend. A strange turn of events I know, but the story works out really well. And much like any good story, there has to be a nemesis somewhere. And in this case it's Vaugner, ruler of Ghostopolis.
What ensues next is a story of bravery and wit, and of love and understanding.
Beautifully illustrated (I love the comic antics of the horse!), this graphic novel is sure to keep you engaged til the final page.
