Smurfs come from eggs!
Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs, that is.
We spotted the Kinder (as in Kindergarten) Surprise ad on TV yesterday and I was delighted that they were having Smurfs! Smurfs is an 80s cartoon. I just had to have one (or two?). Problem is, it's a random pick. Not sure what you're going to get.
This prompted me to Google for Kinder Suprise, owing to the rather unique name. It turned out that this confectionery by Ferrero has a fascinating history. According to Wikipedia, Kinder Surprise originated from Italy in 1972, and was hugely popular in Germany. It was marketed to many countries except in the US where the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act prohibits the embedding of "non-nutritive items" in confections.
I also learned that Kinder is a German word for "Children", making Kinder Surprise more sensible!
So we went to the supermarket for groceries and for a couple of Kinder Surprise eggs. It costs $2.60 each and the eggs were unmarked. Nowhere did it say that it's actually part of the Smurfs edition. So we just bought one. If we got some other toy, Jo-Lo will be happy. If it's a Smurf, I will be happy!
Yay! It's Papa Smurf!
There are actually collectors of Kinder Surprise toys. Hmmm... tempting....
