Pine trees and radars

Two iconic images of Baguio City: the pine trees that naturally scents the air (get it while you can - this is fast disappearing, unfortunately) and the radar on top of Mt Sto Tomas, said to be the airconditioning units of Baguio City.

Mt. Cloud Bookshop

We were actually just strolling by upper Session Road (right next to SM) when we saw Casa Vallejo.  This is a building built in 1909 and for much of the past decades, was closed down.  I actually thought it was going to be another victim of "modernization".  In fact, just a few blocks from it, two new building constructions were underway.

We were quite pleased to see that Casa Vallejo is back and very much alive.  There are a number of establishments thriving in this historic site.  One is a spa, another is a cafe/restaurant called Hill Station, and a lovely little bookshop called Mt. Cloud.

My friend Leo actually mentioned this shop to us a few times and he was enticing us to visit.  Well, Leo and I had this pasttime when we were still fresh grads with only a few coins in our pockets.  We'd go to National Bookstore (either in Glorietta or Megamall) and browse through the books and magazines there for hours on end.  Of course, when we finally became employed we were then able to purchase books and magazines we liked.  So thanks, National Bookstore, for tolerating us in those early years.  I have seen though, that policies have changed greatly and browsing is now prohibited.  But they opened another shop (Powerbooks) which encourages such, and with a Starbucks outlet right in the store too!

But I digress.

Mt. Cloud actually encourages you to spend your time leisurely browsing through their collection.  They even allow you to bring in your coffee from neighboring Hill Station so you can truly get cozy with the book of your choice.  Of course, buying books will also help keep the shop open...

We were here for just a quick visit.  Wish we had more time to spend and just chill out for an afternoon.  Next vacation perhaps...
(I said I was going to buy one of these "make your own parol" kits but was hesitant if the NZ Environment Protection Agency would allow me to bring into the country the bamboo frame)

By the way, Mt Cloud Bookshop has a website!

Notre Dame Hospital in Baguio City, Philippines

The Notre Dame is one of the places I have never been to during the entire time I was living in the city.  One, there was never really a reason for me to go there; two, I heard it was being run by nuns and places run by nuns are - I assumed - off limits to those who do not have to be there (case in point: Pink Sisters' chapel where a gate separates the general public from their praying area, and the convent at St Louis School Center where I studied grade school), and three: there is a rather long driveway from the gate to the main building which makes it look exclusive and generally not for snooping around.

Then the 1990 earthquake devastated Baguio and Notre Dame was closed for many years. I never thought it will reopen actually, and assumed the old building was condemned.

However, I finally found a reason to visit the place because that was where my mother-in-law had her check-up when we were on vacation last December 2010. And that is also where we brought Jo-Lo when he had a high fever (turned out to be bacterial infection of the tonsils). The facilities look great, actually, and the sprawling building which I thought was condemned is standing strong... or was it heavily renovated?

One major thing that has changed though is the very spacious grounds fronting the main building. A new construction is underway, which has taken up pretty much of the open space, leaving room only for the driveway and limited parking.

The only photo I have seen so far of an old, post-earthquake Notre Dame can be found here. Wish I saw the old, magnificent Notre Dame in person...

Burnham Lake

This photo was taken at SM.  It's been many years since I've seen the fountain on this man-made lake come alive.  Boating is a popular pastime here.

Marbay in Baguio City, Philippines

Marbay is located right behind the Maharlika Livelihood Center in lower Session Road.  Most people - especially the tourists - would visit only the section of Marbay where there are silver craft, weaving and wood carving.  But aside from a thriving tourist industry, the same building has tailoring shops as well as a number of stalls selling military gear.

On a couple of occasions I have tried the tailoring service and their work is good.  And affordable too!  Wish I also bought a military jacket to show off!
